Né le 30 mai 1928 à 's-Graveland, et mort le 16 janvier 2012 à AmsterdamNé à Graveland, en Hollande,

C'est dans son pays natal que Gustav Leonhardt fait ses études musicales avant de venir travailler à la Schola Cantorum Basiliensis. Il débute en jouant L'Art de la fugue de Jean-Sebastien Bach, à Vienne, ville où il s'installe et où il enseigne à l'Académie de musique de 1952 à 1955. Professeur au Conservatoire d'Amsterdam et organiste à la Waalsekerk de la même ville, depuis 1954, il donne ensuite des cours à l'Université de Harvard, aux Etats-Unis, en 1969-70.

En 1955, il fonde le Leonhardt Consort qui, tout en jouant sur des instruments modernes, occupe un grand rôle dans le renouveau de la musique ancienne. Il travaille avec de nombreux musiciens, notamment P. Herreweghe, N. Harnoncourt et les frères Kuijken qui jouent sur instruments anciens avec leur ensemble La Petite Bande.

Au fil des ans, Gustav Leonhardt privilégie sa carrière de claveciniste où il révèle un tempérament rigoureux et un esprit imaginatif qui lui permettent de redonner vie aux musiques des XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles.Il réalise notamment une édition de L'Art de la fugue de Bach en 1952, différentes partitions de Sweelinck en 1968 et enregistre de nombreux disques.

En 1967, il aborde le cinéma en tenant le rôle de Jean-Sebastien Bach dans le film de Jean-Marie Straub: Chroniques d'Anna-Magdalena Bach.
Gustav Leonhardt est considéré comme une autorité intellectuelle et artistique sur la musique ancienne. En tant que musicologue, il a publié une étude sur L'Art de la fugue de Bach (1952/85), et édité les œuvres pour claviers de Sweelinck.

Le 12 décembre 20112, Gustav Leonhardt met fin à sa carrière en raison de problèmes de santé, après un concert au Théâtre des Bouffes du Nord à Paris3. Il meurt, des suites d'un cancer2, le 16 janvier 2012 à Amsterdam.
