En 1977, le Monteverdi Orchestra donne son premier concert sur instruments d’époque au Festival de musique ancienne d’Innsbruck; l’ensemble prend le nom d’English Baroque Soloists en 1978.

| Fondé en 1968 par John Eliot Gardiner pour constituer le complément naturel du Monteverdi Choir (qu'il avaoit créé en 1964), le Monteverdi Orchestra est un ensemble jouant sur instruments modernes. En 1977, le Monteverdi Orchestra donne son premier concert sur instruments d’époque au Festival de musique ancienne d’Innsbruck; l’ensemble prend le nom d’English Baroque Soloists en 1978. | |
