Fondé en 1969 à Berlin, Allemagne Au cours de ses dix premières années, l'ensemble se consacra à l'interprétation d'oeuvres contemporaines. Quand Hartmut Haenchen en devint le directeur musical, en 1980, il se tourna vers des oeuvres de la période près-classique. Ce n'est qu'en 1984 que l'orchestre opta pour son nom actuel. Bien que jouant sur instruments modernes, il s'applique à interpréter ces oeuvres dans le respect des techniques de l'époque. L'orchestre a réalisé de nombreuses émissions de radio et de télévision et enregistré plus de 40 disques, obtenant de nombreuses récompenses. L'orchestre de chambre a effectué de nombreuses tournées en Europe et au Japon.
