Matthew Halls est un chef d'orchestre anglais mais également un brillant claveciniste et organiste. Il a étudié la musique à l'université d'Oxford et notamment l'orgue. Il fut claveciniste de l'European Union Baroque Orchestra en 1998.
Il a collaboré avec les plus grands orchestres jouant sur instruments anciens : dont l'Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra, Les Arts Florissants, the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, the Academy of Ancient Music, the Theatre of Early Music, Montreal et le New York Collegium.
En tant que soliste il s'est produit au Cheltenham International Festival, au Handel Festival de Halle, à l'Enescu Festival de Bucarest, à l'Ottawa International Chamber Festival...
