Sir Richard Armstrong est un chef d'orchestre britannique. Il a étudié à la Wyggeston Grammar School for Boys et au Corpus Christi College de Cambridge où il étudiait notamment l'orgue.
De 1973 à 1986 Richard Armstrong fut directeur musical du Welsh National Opera. A cette époque, il travaille avec de grands chefs européens comme Peter Stein, Joachim Herz, Lucian Pintilie et Harry Kupfer, dirigeant un large répertoire : Verdi, Wagner, Janáček, Strauss, Berg et Britten. En 1986 il participe au cycle complet du Ring.
Il fut ensuite directeur de la musique au Scottish Opera de 1993 à 2005. Pendant cette période, il dirigera des opéras dont Jenůfa, From the House of the Dead, I due Foscari, Salome, Fidelio, Mary Stuart, Káťa Kabanová, Peter Grimes, Tristan und Isolde, La forza del destino, The Jacobin, La traviata, Il trovatore, la première mondiale de Inês de Castro (James MacMillan), The Cunning Little Vixen, Turandot, Hansel et Gretel, La bohème, The Queen of Spades, Dalibor, Der Rosenkavalier, Macbeth, Parsifal, Don Giovanni, Erwartung, Bluebeard's Castle et The Knot Garden.
Il conduira le Scottish Opera à Lisbonne en 1994, eu Festival de Vienne en 2000, et à Porto en 2001.
Après Cambridge, Richard Armstrong rejoint l'équipe du Royal Opera de Covent Garden, où il travaille avec Georg Solti sur le Ring, Carlo Maria Giulini pour La traviata, Otto Klemperer pour Fidelio et Rafael Kubelík pour Jenůfa.
Au UK il a dirigé Billy Budd, Andrea Chénier, Un ballo in maschera et Don Carlos au Royal Opera de Covent Garden, Aida et Wozzecken a co-production avec le Scottish Opera.
Il sera invité à Francfort (chef invité principal pendant deux saisons), Genève, Paris, Munich, Amsterdam, Rome, Lisbonne, Bruxelles, Nice , Stuttgart, Berlin, Toulouse et Los Angeles ainsi qu'au Canada et en Australie.
Richard Armstrong a particpé aux Proms en 1979 et a travaillé avec the London Philharmonic, Philharmonia, BBC Symphony Orchestra, BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Hallé, Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Scottish Chamber Orchestra, the Royal Scottish National Orchestra et the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra.
Il a enrgistré des CDs avec Roberto Alagna, Angela Gheorghiu, Deborah Voigt et Thomas Hampson à la tête du LPO, de l'Orhectre de Covent Garden, du Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra et de l'Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment.
