Jürgen Sonnentheil est né dans le sud de l'Allemagne. Il a étudié l'orgue à Bayreuth , Cologne (avec Viktor Lukas) et Düsseldorf (avec Hans-Dieter Möller). Il a également suivi des cours d'interprétation notamment avec Gaston Litaize, Ton Koopman ou Marie-Claire Alain. Il a été lauréat de nombreux concours internationaux. Il a fondé l'ensemble "das Neue-Eröffnete Orchestre" qui joue sur instruments d'époque. Il est également professeur invité au Conservatoire Royal d'Anvers.
